Luisa González, representing the leftist Citizen Revolution Movement, has emerged as the leading candidate in the upcoming presidential elections in Ecuador, according to latest opinion polls.
The electoral campaign in Ecuador is entering its final stretch ahead of the general elections scheduled for February 9, when 13.7 million Ecuadorians will go to the polls.
In Ecuador, voting is mandatory for presidential, National Assembly, and Andean Parliament elections.
Thursday, January 30, was the last day when pollsters can publish their results, as established by the Ecuadorian electoral law, known as the Code of Democracy.
A recent poll conducted by the company Negocios y Estrategias between January 23 and 25 reveals that Luisa González, candidate for the Revolución Ciudadana Reto alliance, is leading with 41% of voter preference. She is followed by the current president and candidate for reelection, Daniel Noboa, with 36%.
According to the poll, 39% of those surveyed consider that the electoral campaign is being carried out with little transparency and without respect for the law. This is relevant given that article 93 of the Code of Democracy establishes that it is mandatory for any public official aspiring for re-election to request a leave of absence during the campaign period; however, President Noboa did not do so, and is conducting his electoral campaign without delegating his vice president to the post during the electoral period.
Moreover, a remarkable 72% of the citizens have already decided their vote, according to this poll.
