A recent survey by the renowned Venezuelan polling firm Hinterlaces revealed that 89% of Venezuelans strongly condemn the US decision authorizing the capture, expulsion, and imprisonment of Venezuelan migrants. These migrants were sent to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador under accusations of belonging to the Tren de Aragua criminal gang, despite no evidence being presented to support the claims.
The study, published on Hinterlacesâ Instagram account, also noted that 85% of respondents support Venezuela’s Return to the Homeland Program, an initiative that repatriates Venezuelans unjustly detained in the US. Only 5% of those surveyed expressed no clear opinion on the US actions.
Widespread discontent with US immigration policies
The survey highlighted broad public outrage over unilateral US actions. A total of 91% of Venezuelans believe that the US actions violate migrantsâ fundamental rights by criminalizing them without due process and subjecting them to inhumane detention conditions in El Salvador.
Additionally, 84% of respondents assert that opposition politician MarĂa Corina Machado has actively supported illegal coercive sanctions against Venezuela, which they say have worsened living conditions for the population.
Government response and international law
President NicolĂĄs Maduro has repeatedly condemned the US measures, calling them a breach of international law and an assault on the dignity of Venezuelans. He reaffirmed his commitment to defending migrantsâ rights and urged the global community to reject these policies.
