The spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, announced that the government of Russia supports the government of President Nicolás Maduro and the people of Venezuela in the face of the constant US interference that the country is suffering since the presidential elections of July 28.
During a press conference on Wednesday, August 21, Zakharova highlighted the peace and stability and the constitutional order maintained by the Venezuelan authorities in spite of the fierce campaign by external agents to delegitimize the results of the presidential elections.
She also pointed out that the evident dissatisfaction of the West with the election results in Venezuela is a typical reaction of those who cannot accept defeat.
“The West is not satisfied with elections in Venezuela, nor with the results of these elections,” she said. “And you can hold these elections as many times as you want, and there have been dozens of elections in Venezuela, but until the result that the West wants is on the scoreboard, it will not calm down.”
In addition, the Russian government spokesperson condemned the recent Declaration of Santo Domingo and the resolution of the Organization of American States (OAS), adopted at the initiative of the United States, calling for internal dissent in Venezuela.
“The call for disobedience of the armed forces against the legitimate authorities of the country is a direct incitement to destabilization, the creation of a situation of controlled chaos in Venezuela, which, in fact, is a favorite tactic of the United States, and of course all this will lead to provoking new waves of immigration,” she added.
The Guaidó issue
The Russian official also addressed the issue of Juan Guaidó’s now defunct “interim presidency,” criticizing the countries that recognized him as “president” of Venezuela and which now seem to have changed their position without explanation.
“At what stage and how did they formalize legislatively or politically in their countries, mainly in the United States, that Guaidó is no longer the president of Venezuela?” questioned Zakharova. “Where was this written, where was this said? So, did they recognize him as president, and now they have abandoned him?”
She also highlighted how inconsistent and dangerous it is to recognize illegitimate political figures and how, as a consequence, that can seriously destabilize a sovereign country, such as happened in Venezuela.
She reiterated Russia’s commitment to Venezuelan sovereignty, emphasizing that the peaceful and sustainable development of the country depends on the will of its people.
“We welcome the intention of the Venezuelan authorities to consistently defend the sovereignty of their country,” she said.
In view of these statements, the foreign affairs minister of Venezuela, Yván Gil, expressed gratitude to Russia for its solidarity in the defense of Venezuelan sovereignty.
