According to the director of the Latin American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in recent years the US seeks to make Latin America “more manageable.”
“The policy of drowning with sanctions was unsuccessful, the ‘Blitzkrieg’ against the Maduro government in Venezuela was unsuccessful,” said the director of the Latin American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexander Schetinin, on Wednesdsy during his speech at the Valdái Debate Club, an annual forum that was established in 2004.
The Russian diplomat added that in Washington today “Monroe Doctrine has been taken out of the closet.”
In his view, in recent years the United States has tried to turn Latin America into a more governable region. “What happens is that in recent years – in the last two years it is more visible – our American partners have been interested in formatting [the region], making it more manageable,” he said.
