Upon requests received from various democratic factors across the country, the Venezuelan Electoral Power has announced the postponement of the upcoming parliamentary and gubernatorial elections. Initially scheduled for April 27, these have now been postponed until May 25, while Sunday, April 27 remains the date of the second popular consultation to select development projects for the communal circuits to pursue.
The Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) announced changes to the electoral schedule this Wednesday, February 19. The president of the CNE, Elvis Amoroso, made the statement at a brief press conference at the main headquarters of the CNE.
โThe CNE informs the people of Venezuela,” Amoroso read from a statement, “that at the request of the various actors in the country’s democratic life, who have decided to participate fully and actively in the electoral process called for April 27, [the CNE] has decided to set a new date for the election of governors and members of the Legislative Councils of the states to the National Assembly, with the intention of facilitating and promoting the participation of the different actors in society to be scheduled for next May 25.”
PSUV Sets Date for Pre-Candidate Selection Amid Upcoming April 27 Elections
This is the first time in almost six years that an election has been postponed in Venezuela, something that many analysts attribute to the non-optimal performance of the current CNE authorities under the leadership of Elvis Amoroso.
In 2018, the presidential elections were delayed for almost one month under very complex circumstances, when Venezuela was plagued with destabilization attempts led by the government of the US empire and after months of violent far-right opposition protests known as guarimbas.
