Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Yván Gil condemned an attack with “incendiary bombs” on the Venezuelan Consulate General in Lisbon, Portugal. The attack that occurred on Saturday, January 11, led to a fire and caused distress to the staff working there. The Venezuelan minister emphasized that no “irrational aggression” will stop the advance of the Bolivarian Revolution.
In a post on social media, Minister Gil published some images of what happened and wrote, “Today, fascism has attacked the headquarters of our Consulate General in Lisbon, Portugal, with incendiary bombs, thus targeting the services provided to our fellow Venezuelans. No irrational aggression of deranged groups will be able to reverse the advances of the Bolivarian Revolution.”
Gil also thanked the Lisbon authorities for their quick intervention in dealing with the fire caused by Molotov cocktails, which did not escalate further, and he expressed confidence that “the investigations that have been initiated will lead to the identification of those who were responsible.”
For its part, the Portuguese government of conservative Prime Minister Luís Montenegro condemned the attack and stated that it was an “intolerable” act.
In this situation of violence instigated by Venezuelan far-right politicians such as María Corina Machado and some figures of the international far right, the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by Paulo Rangel, published a message of support on social media on Sunday, January 12, where it defended the inviolability of diplomatic facilities.
“The Portuguese government strongly condemns the attack on the Venezuelan consulate in Lisbon,” the ministry published. “The government has ordered an immediate reinforcement of security and an appropriate police investigation. This is an intolerable act. The inviolability of diplomatic missions must be respected in all cases.”
