The attorney general of Venezuela and president of the presidential commission for constitutional reform, Tarek William Saab, announced this Sunday that, after hearing President Nicolás Maduro’s recommendations, the commission has decided to expand the consultation process on the constitutional reform to achieve greater participation and dialogue with all sectors of society and in all regions of the country.
After casting his vote during this Sunday’s parliamentary and regional elections, President Maduro stated that he had “spoken with the Constitutional Reform Commission, and we have agreed to prepare a more open, more communicative, and timely consultation system, in order to submit the Constitutional Reform bill to the New National Assembly in January 2026.”
The comment was made while explaining that state institutions are working on improving the level of democracy in the Venezuelan electoral system, an approach he called the “communal electoral system.”
President Maduro: Final Constitutional Reform Proposal Must be Ready in 90 Days
“Our mission as a commission is to gather as many proposals as possible and engage in dialogue with as many sectors as possible, so that this reform process is as inclusive as possible and contains the proposals that the country as a whole demands for updating and improving the 1999 Constitution,” said Tarek William Saab, after announcing the extension.
The Venezuelan attorney general noted that consultations will continue until the end of the year to present the reform bill to the new National Assembly, which is being elected on May 25 and will take office for the 2026–2031 term in January 2026.
For many analysts the constitutional reform process has been affected by the strengthening of the illegal US sanctions announce by President Donald Trump last February. Despite the economic impact of the decision being expected to be less harsh than 2019’s sanctions, it will have important implications for the Venezuelan economy according to experts.
