Venezuela’s indigenous communities will elect their National Assembly representatives on June 1, reinforcing constitutional rights and participatory democracy. The process highlights the Bolivarian government’s commitment to inclusion and indigenous sovereignty.
This Sunday, June 1, Venezuela’s indigenous peoples will once again exercise their constitutional right to political participation by electing three national parliamentarians and nine regional deputies.
This historic event, in accordance with Article 125 of the Bolivarian Constitution, underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, sovereignty, and the protection of indigenous rights within the framework of the country’s robust electoral calendar.

The upcoming indigenous elections are a direct result of the participatory and inclusive approach promoted by the Bolivarian Revolution. Unlike conventional electoral processes, indigenous communities will select their representatives through traditional second-tier assemblies, where community-appointed spokespersons gather to elect deputies in general meetings. This method honors ancestral practices and ensures that the voices of Venezuela’s first peoples are authentically represented in the National Assembly.
The process is proportional to the populations of seven key states, Apure, Amazonas, Delta Amacuro, Anzoátegui, La Guayana Esequiba, Sucre, and Zulia, guaranteeing fair representation for diverse indigenous nations across the country. The National Electoral Council (CNE) has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding these participatory mechanisms as a pillar of Venezuela’s democratic system.
In preparation for the elections, the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) have launched a coordinated operation to ensure the secure transport and custody of electoral materials to remote indigenous regions.
Commander Domingo Hernández Lárez shared images of military personnel delivering ballot boxes, reaffirming the state’s dedication to a transparent and secure voting process. This logistical support is vital for upholding the rights of indigenous communities, many of whom reside in geographically isolated areas.
The indigenous elections complement the legislative and regional elections held on May 25, where the ruling coalition, led by President Nicolás Maduro, secured a decisive victory and reaffirmed the strength of Chavismo in the face of external pressures and disinformation campaigns. With these elections, the National Assembly will reach its full composition of 285 deputies, further consolidating Venezuela’s participatory democracy.
