The president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge RodrĂguez, has once again urged the plenary session of the National Assembly to approve a new agreement, to “enthusiastically” request the Nicolás Maduro administration to break diplomatic, commercial, and consular relations with the Kingdom of Spain.
RodrĂguez reported new evidence detailing the participation of the Spanish state in the mercenary plot unveiled a few weeks ago, which ended in the capture of two Spanish nationals allegedly connected to the National Intelligence Service of Spain (CNI). The Chavista leader clarified that those arrested were definitely not in Venezuela for tourism, and clear evidence has been gathered to prove it, announcing that information will be released promptly by the corresponding authorities.
“Patience has a limit, and the precise point that exceeds those limits implies affecting our sovereignty and our independence,” RodrĂguez stated. “That is why I ask you to approve [this] agreement enthusiastically, indignantly, and conscious of the value of the glory that we have inherited from our liberators.”
“Just as the qualities of respect, decency, and dignity are in our blood, we also have a genetic mark of sovereignty and independence,” RodrĂguez said.
During a plenary session of parliament on September 12, Jorge RodrĂguez had asked the Foreign Policy Commission for an immediate meeting to draft a resolution—to be approved by the plenary session as soon as possible—to request “the government of Venezuela to immediately break all relations” with the European country, including commercial flights and cooperation in the energy sector.
“Let all representatives of the Spanish Government’s delegation and all consulates and consuls leave Venezuela,” he had said at the time, “and we will bring our own people from there, let [their representatives] stay with their murderers, their coup plotters, their fascists, their violent people.”
The initial request of the Venezuelan parliament on breaking relations with Spain was in repudiation of the interventionist actions of Spain, regarding the approval from the Spanish Congress of a resolution recognizing far-right former Venezuelan opposition candidate, Edmundo González—who had fled to Madrid after evading Venezuelan justice—as president-elect, disrespecting the will of the Venezuelan people.
RodrĂguez promised in the Tuesday session to detail everything that had been agreed upon with González, calling him a coward for breaking his word and “leaving the Spanish ambassador in Caracas in a bad light.”
The European Union’s representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, told EFE on Tuesday that the solution to the crisis in Venezuela would be resolved after “international pressure,” to which RodrĂguez responded: “You are an idiot, you speak like that about Venezuela whenever you feel like it,” adding that “(Borrell) considers himself entitled to lecture us.”
“Spain, the European Union, the Spanish courts, and the Spanish government are not involved in Venezuela’s internal affairs,” Rodriguez warned, while making clear that Venezuela gained its independence by fighting and expelling the Spanish conquerors in the 19th century under the leadership of SimĂłn BolĂvar, the Liberator.

The Spanish crown: cradle of corruption
In response to Spanish imperial interference in Venezuela, the president of the AN also proposed to the plenary to urge the Government of Spain to abolish the Spanish monarchy, considering it an institution linked to corruption and an “expression of the extreme right,” as well as to vote for agreements for the independence of Catalonia and the Basque Country.
“It seems that there is a sector of Spanish politics that does not forgive the defeat that Venezuela inflicted on it with its independence 200 years ago,” he said, highlighting the fact that “Spain has become a refuge for criminals and murderers. How can the Spanish Congress justify assuming extraterritorial status and deciding to replace the Electoral Power of Venezuela?” he asked.
The agreement proposes to the Spanish government “that the monarchy, which has served no purpose other than corruption, chaos, and the expression of the far right, be abolished,” stated RodrĂguez, who declared the point approved following a visible majority of raised hands in the plenary session.
In his opinion, the Crown is “a ridiculous institution, based on something as barbaric as blood rights.”
“It is a disgrace that in 2024, well into the 21st century,” he explained, “there are still human beings and political and social organizations that believe that some people are destined, by blood, to get their hands on the public treasury of a country. It is barbaric, it is a barbaric expression.”
