The Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) stated on Monday, September 23, that it would prosecute the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, for various crimes committed in Venezuela.
The proceedings against Milei began on September 18 when the Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab appointed two prosecutors to process an arrest warrant against him for the theft of an EMTRASUR aircraft and for human right violations against peaceful protests in Argentina.
According to the TSJ ruling, Javier Milei will be prosecuted for seven crimes, including money laundering, simulation of punishable acts, unlawful deprivation of liberty, unlawful interference in the operational safety of civil aviation, disabling of aircraft, and criminal association.
The Venezuelan Supreme Court also ordered the prosecution of the Argentinian presidential secretary, Karina Elizabeth Milei, and Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich for their responsibility in human rights violations against protestors.
The case against Javier Milei comes after the Argentinian president allowed the United States government to seize a plane belonging to the Aerocargo del Sur (EMTRASUR) Transport Company, a subsidiary of Conviasa and publicly-owned. The plane was illegally held in Argentina for two years.
Milei accelerated judicial permissions to transfer the aircraft to the United States, where it appeared days later wrecked at an airport in the state of Florida.
For Venezuelan authorities, the theft of the EMTRASUR Boeign 747-300 jumbo jet was “a crime against a duly registered aircraft and against the Venezuelan people.”
