The Venezuelan Supreme Court held a public hearing regarding an appeal for protection that the Bolivarian Movement of Aristóbulo Istúriz Families filed against the social network TikTok for hosting “viral challenges.”
The hearing took place at the headquarters of the the Supreme Court in Caracas, with the presence of the Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, among other members of the government and representatives of the constitutional chamber of the highest court in the country, as well as members of the aforementioned movement.
The appeal for protection is in support of the request made by President Nicolás Maduro, who gave instructions for TikTok Latin America to remove from the country all publications linked to challenges that can be fatal for children.
The text expresses deep concern about the consequences of the so-called viral challenges posted on social media, especially on TikTok, “including poisonings that have put the physical and psychological integrity of our children, adolescents and young people at risk,” the document stresses.
It also demands that government authorities “quickly make relevant inquiries into the events that occurred in our institutions and educational centers in the country, so that the responsibilities that may arise are determined, and the full weight of the law is applied to those involved.”
