In a special interview with journalist Breno Altman, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro detailed the major changes expected for the proposed Constitutional Reform.
During the conversation, the national leader explained that the proposed Constitutional Reform will transform the state, the economy, and society.
He indicated that this process aims to unify and consolidate the climate of peace in Venezuela and increase the empowerment of the people.
He also announced that the debate for the reform will take place, alongside civilians, starting on February 15.
“The state is the Constitution, the state is the laws governing the economy, the state is capturing wealth,” noted the president. “We are building a social state of justice and law to guarantee peace and economic development, with opportunity for all sectors that want to grow,” said the head of state.
In this regard, he recalled that in Venezuela, the Constitution cannot be modified without the approval of the constituent power of the people.

Regarding the Constitutional reform, President Maduro stated that there is a broad consensus in the country around three fundamental issues, which will be addressed during this process.
These three issues are the expansion of democracy towards a more direct and participatory model, the redefinition of social values in a context wherein the models of Western civilization are exhausted, and establishment of a diversified and self-sustaining economy that is not dependent on oil income.
“The state is expanding the base of citizen democracy, by the people and for the people,” added the president.
On January 15 of this year, during his annual address of the nation, President Maduro signed the decree to create a commission for the reform of the Constitution of Venezuela.
This commission is chaired by the attorney general, Tarek William Saab, and will allow Venezuela, according to the president, “to expand democracy, define the profile of society, and define the basis of the new economy.”
