Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro asserted that El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, “is a despicable monster” who violates the human rights of Venezuelan migrants held in the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) mega-prison.
“… the abuses and crimes against humanity that he is committing—Bukele, the serial violator of human rights in Central America—and the Salvadoran people know it,” the president said during the 83rd edition of Con Maduro+ this Monday.
He noted that, although Latin America and international human rights organizations are also aware of this, “they prefer to remain silent because they are used to attack pro-independence countries, countries in the global south.”
The anticipated return and the cynical response of the Supreme Court of El Salvador
President Maduro, in this same vein, reiterated his message to the migrants’ families that they would soon return to the country. “I tell you, sooner rather than later, we will have the 252 Venezuelans here; because we have justice and reason,” he said.
He indicated that the United Nations system “seems to have exhausted itself because it is subject to the imposition of neo-fascist rules,” referring to the families of migrants who have sought help from the organization without receiving a response.
The president also rejected the proposal to jail migrants in the United States, highlighting the integrationist and humanist policies that Venezuela pursues with its migrants.
Earlier, the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, described the response of the Supreme Court of El Salvador as cynical, following the court’s refusal to allow the Public Prosecutor’s Office to intervene in defense of the human rights of Venezuelan migrants abducted in that country.
“The prosecutor was the first to act, because he has been in contact with that court regarding the case of some Venezuelans to be extradited, and after 80 days, they responded, confirming that they have abducted 252 migrant workers without the right to defense, and they know the crime they have committed,” President Maduro added.
In a statement, the attorney general rejected the dilatory and evasive tactics of the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of El Salvador, which, through this ruling, seeks to shirk its constitutional responsibility to protect the liberty and personal integrity of the 252 Venezuelan citizens expelled from the United States.
Trump will be able to deport migrants to other countries
The Supreme Court on Monday gave the Trump administration the green light to resume deportations of immigrants to third countries such as South Sudan and El Salvador, a victory for the White House and its campaign of mass deportations.
The Supreme Court’s decision suspends a federal judge’s order halting the deportation of eight immigrants to South Sudan, including two Cubans and one person from Mexico, as well as individuals from Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar, with only one person from South Sudan, according to news agencies.
To expedite deportations, Washington is seeking agreements with other countries to accept migrants expelled from the country.
