With the registration of Daniel Quintero and Alfredo Saade, Colombia’s ruling Historical Pact coalition has 10 pre-candidates for the internal consultation to select its presidential candidate for the March 2026 elections.
Former head of the presidential office of Colombia, Alfredo Saade, presented his main proposals ahead of the consultation: to convene a Constituent Assembly to allow Gustavo Petro’s re-election, regulate the media with penalties for misinformation, close the Prosecutor’s Office and reform the judiciary to serve the people, promote the eradication of drug trafficking and political mafias, not negotiate with terrorists, and strengthen popular power as the guiding force of the government.
Saade also emphasized that entrepreneurs will be “allies, not employees” of the state, and he promised to eradicate state corruption.

Daniel Quintero, former mayor of MedellĂn, joins the race with his track record in urban innovation and his emphasis on social and environmental justice, thus amplifying the range of options and discourses within the ruling coalition’s internal consultation of October.
The members of the Historical Pact have until September 26 to register new candidates. The internal consultation will be held on October 26, after which the winner will be nominated as the official presidential candidate and will head the party’s list for Congress.
The coalition’s strategy focuses on consolidating the unity of the left, combining programmatic debate in the internal campaign with citizen mobilization in the streets, and projecting a candidate who synthesizes President Petro’s administrative path and emerging social demands.
With 10 pre-candidates in the running, the Historical Pact will seek to select, in its internal polls, its best candidate to retain power in 2026.
