The attorney general of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, stated that a US military man recently detained in Venezuela had entered the country “without identification and supporting documents.”
At a press conference on Wednesday, September 4, the attorney general reported that an investigation is being carried out and guaranteed that the detainee will have a “fair, independent, and impartial” trial, ensuring a judicial process that will be transparent and respectful of the detainee’s rights.
“We are always attentive and vigilant so that there is due process, a fair trial, and an objective, independent, and impartial investigation,” he said.
In response to a reporter’s question, Saab stated, “The person you mention has dual nationality, US and Mexican, and it appears that his primary nationality is Mexican.”

Minister of the Interior Diosdado Cabello also commented on the case during Wednesday’s broadcast of his TV program Con El Mazo Dando.
“We have news of a detained US military officer,” Cabello said. “Some months ago, we alerted everyone about the plans of extremist groups that would try to infiltrate Venezuela to make an assassination attempt against President Nicolás Maduro and Chavista other leaders to collect the famous reward from the US.”
Minister Cabello also refuted the claim made by the US government that US authorities are already in communication with the Venezuelan authorities regarding the detainee.
“The striking thing about the matter is that the White House claims it is in communication with the Venezuelan authorities. They must be talking with Guaidó or Edmundo González,” he commented.
