Brazil will send two electoral observers to Venezuela for the July 28 presidential elections. The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) of Brazil, which a month ago rejected an invitation from the government of Venezuela to participate, announced on Wednesday, July 17, that it has reviewed its earlier decision and will send two observers.
Although the highest electoral authority of Brazil had initially decided against sending electoral observers to Venezuela without explaining the reasons for the refusal, on Wednesday it notified the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs that it will send two of its technical experts to observe the upcoming Venezuelan presidential elections.
The two observers will be the director of the Electoral Management Advisory of the TSE, Sandra Damiani, and the head of the Electoral Systems Coordination, José de Melo Cruz, according to the TSE notification.
The Brazilian electoral court did not explain the reason for its change of decision.
Chavistas Warn About Escalation of Media Warfare Against Venezuela’s Elections (+Machado)
In June the Brazilian TSE rejected the invitation of the Venezuelan National Electoral Council amid a controversy over the CNE’s decision to prohibit the European Union from observing the elections.
However, the CNE clarified that its prohibition against EU observers was due to the European bloc’s arrogant and interventionist actions in the internal affairs of Venezuela.
Brazilian authorities have expressed their confidence that the political situation in Venezuela is tending to normalize, and that the lifting of the unilateral coercive measures will contribute to a quicker political normalization. The TSE also expressed its confidence that transparent and fair elections will be held, with the inclusion of nine opposition candidates.
