The constitutional vice president of Ecuador, Verónica Abad, was forced to leave the headquarters of the Ecuadorian Vice Presidency as President Daniel Noboa prevented her entry.
On Friday, February 7, while Abad tried and failed to enter her office, people around the headquarters shouted: “Out, Noboa, out!” The vice president was prevented by police from entering the office after Noboa, through Decree 505, unconstitutionally appointed Cynthia Gellibert as acting vice president.
Judge Nubia Vera, who ruled in favor of Abad and dismissed the administrative summary against Vice President Abad through which she was suspended from her position, criticized the action of the Noboa government.

Later, Vice President Verónica Abad published an open letter on social media addressed to President Daniel Noboa, in which she stated that there are urgent challenges facing the state, which is currently going through a security crisis.
“This is precisely why I believe that the time has come to openly recognize our differences and resolve them in favor of order and the common good,” she wrote.
“Maintaining my dignity and respect, I have always complied with the assignments entrusted by you,” she wrote. “Therefore, it is required, Mr. President, that you grant me the dignified conditions to leave, honoring the order established in the norm and making the disposition of public resources transparent.”
Situation in Ecuador in the Lead-Up to Presidential Elections
Judge Nubia Vera accompanied Verónica Abad while she tried to enter her office, highlighting that her presence was to verify compliance with the ruling she issued. “I have acted in accordance with the constitution,” she said.
On January 11, Judge Vera issued her ruling, ordering the reinstatement of Verónica Abad to her position after she was removed by Noboa last year, causing a serious breach of the constitution and leading to a public scandal.
Meanwhile, on January 17, 2025, the Constitutional Court of Ecuador declared unconstitutional President Daniel Noboa’s measure by which he had suspended Abad from her duties.
