During events for Flag Day, the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, announced the appointment of Rixi Moncada as the new Secretary of Defense. Her appointment takes place after the resignation of José Manuel Zelaya, coinciding with the resignation of his father, Carlos Zelaya, from the position of Secretary of the National Congress.
The announcement was made by President Castro this Sunday, September 1, in her inaugural speech for the 2024 Fiestas Patrias. Castro said, “I want to announce the appointment of the citizen lawyer, Rixi Moncada Godoy, to the position of Secretary of Defense, so that she can raise our flag high and remind us that our true value lies in a dignified, resilient people determined to forge their own destiny.”
José Manuel Zelaya, who resigned as Minister of Defense, is the son of Carlos Zelaya, who also resigned from his position as secretary of the National Congress. Both resignations occurred in the context of revelations about Carlos Zelaya’s meetings, in 2013, with foreign actors involved in the drug trafficking investigation against former President Juan Orlando Hernández.
In his resignation message, José Manuel Zelaya stated that “the mission of the resistance that Libre Party champions is above the exercise of a public office” and stressed the importance of allowing a free investigation.
