The president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Nicolás Maduro, asked that the proposals of candidates for the elections of the National Assembly (AN) be presented to him in a week. “At least, in a week I want to have the proposals of PSUV candidates for the next elections, and also a model of the alliances that we are going to make with the revolutionary parties of Venezuela (GPP),” he declared during a videoconference with the party’s national leadership, broadcast by Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).
“We are going to choose the best deputies. The best are those who serve the people and are committed to the legacy of Commander Hugo Chávez,” he added.
He agreed with the party leadership to advance the awareness and preparation of grassroots leaders and social movements to fight for the National Assembly. “We are going to open the floodgates for social movements, for popular power and grassroots leadership.”

The President also urged: “Let’s look for new sectors, because life is changing; it is dynamic. New sectors and new leaders emerge. Let us seek, to avoid having the same candidates! Make the roster out of new people. There, in great political and social alliances . . . may new people come! Of those humble people who are on the streets fighting every day, who may not come out every day declaring on television, but who are fighting, who have a face, a voice and a strength. Let’s find the ones with strength!”
He recalled that political thought and action must be “based on criticism and permanent self-criticism, putting commitment, loyalty, humility and sincerity at the center.” He urged the putting aside of criticism aimed at destroying or satisfying someone’s ego. “Criticism and self-criticism is to educate us, to solve problems. And the people know that they have a revolutionary government that is always going to be fair, that is going to work with the truth and that is always going to do justice. And if there is an error here or there, when discovered, with criticism and self-criticism, it will be rectified and justice will be done.”

He also warned the party leaders “not to play an advanced position”, as those who do so within the PSUV will be left out of the process.
Likewise, he instructed the electoral campaign for the parliamentary elections to be organized and evaluated, guaranteeing sanitary measures against Covid-19. “Let’s think about how you are going to do the campaign because we are in a battle with Covid-19; campaigns by social networks, video conferences, house by house, concentrations, considering sanitary measures; a colorful and renewing campaign,” he said.
He affirmed that, amid the pandemic and the blockade imposed by the United States,”the time has come for a new National Assembly (AN), and by the vote.”
On June 12, the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) appointed new directors and rectors of the National Electoral Council (CNE) to organize the electoral process scheduled for this year. As President of the Electoral Power, Indira Alfonzo was appointed and as Vice President Rafael Simón Jiménez; while Tania D ‘Amelio, Gladys Gutiérrez and José Luis Gutiérrez Parra were named main members.
The appointment and swearing-in took place after the TSJ declared the legislative omission of the AN, which is currently in contempt, following the request of a group of right-wing parties to appoint new electoral authorities. It is also part of the agreements of the National Dialogue Table made up of actors from the Venezuelan opposition and the national government.
