Mexico is Ready to Serve as Mediator for Peace in Venezuela
On April 6th, the Bolivarian Government consolidated its call for peace through dialogue and the implementation of the Montevideo Mechanism.
Mexican President Manuel LĂłpez Obrador (AMLO) said during a press conference at the Mexican National Palace on April 8th that his administration is willing to serve as a mediator for a peaceful solution to the conflict that is ongoing in Venezuela. AMLO also emphasized that this provision is directly related to the tradition of foreign policy used by Mexico throughout its history.
The Mexican President portrayed a great deal of confidence in his administration’s endeavor to facilitate the dialogue between the government of President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan opposition.
“We are willing to help the dialogue take place. Mexico has the open doors to seek a peaceful solution to the Venezuelan conflict, as it has always done; it is part of its tradition of foreign policy, only that it is necessary to get the agreement of all parties,”
Over the weekend, President Maduro requested that Bolivia, Mexico, Uruguay and the Caribbean Community (Caricom) colloborate together to resume the Montevideo Mechanism.
“I will make a call to the President of Mexico, AndrĂ©s Manuel LĂłpez Obrador. I will make a call to the President of Uruguay, Dr. TabarĂ© Vázquez. I will make a call to the President of Bolivia, Evo Morales. I will make a call to (…) the 14 Governments of Caricom to resume the initiative of dialogue decided in Montevideo, ” President Maduro said.
The Montevideo Mechanism refers to the intention to set up a dialogue process Venezuela. It was a mechanism that was agreed upon in Uruguay on January 6 and later implemented in February of this year.​​​​​​​
