The National Assembly of Venezuela unanimously approved the Liberator Simón Bolívar Organic Law against the Imperialist Blockade and in Defense of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
After the law was approved on Thursday, November 28, the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez and all the deputies headed to the Plaza Bolívar where they sang the national anthem and placed a floral offering before the statue of the Liberator Simón Bolívar.
During the parliamentary session, Jorge Rodríguez stated that this is a law for the protection of the people, the territory, the sovereignty, the history, and the legacy that will be left for future generations. “This law was passed to vindicate the name of the greatest man in the history of this continent—so great is his legacy, example, and his feat of independence that even more than 200 years later, the empire that feared him and still fears him, the empire that hated him and still hates him, insists on trying to tarnish his name,” he said, referring to the Banning Operations and Leases with the Illegitimate Venezuelan Authoritarian Regime Act, with an acronym BOLIVAR, recently adopted by the US House of Representatives.
He added that the deputies who raised their hands to approve the new organic law are “dignified people, free people, independent people.”
Rodríguez, after declaring the Law as approved, stated that it will be sent to the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice for it to issue a ruling on the constitutionality of its organic nature.
Some aspects of the law
On November 18, the United States House of Representatives approved the BOLIVAR Act with the aim of strengthening economic and financial restrictions against Venezuela and establishing sanctions against all entities trade with the Venezuelan government.
Following this event, the Venezuelan National Assembly proceeded to draft a bill, named after the Liberator, with the aim of redressing the US imperialist attempt of tarnishing the name of the Father of the Nation, and establishing severe sanctions for those who call for foreign interventions, economic sanctions, or those who support the blockade.
The approved law establishes that individuals who, at any time before the July 28 presidential elections, have promoted, instigated, requested, invoked, favored, supported, or participated in the adoption or execution of unilateral coercive measures or other restrictive or punitive measures against the Venezuelan people, the State, or its authorities, by a State, groups of States, or foreign corporations, shall not be eligible to run for public positions. The law imposes a political disqualification of 60 years for those who commit these offenses.
Further, the same sanction is foreseen for individuals who have participated or profited, directly or indirectly, from the execution of administrative or judicial measures in foreign jurisdictions, aimed at the preventive assurance, freezing, embargo, or confiscation of assets of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, without having the approval or authorization of legitimately constituted authorities.
The sanction also applies for those who have participated in armed actions against the Venezuelan people and acts that negatively impact Venezuela’s sovereignty and territorial security.
The law also establishes trials in absentia and political disqualification for life.
