President Nicolás Maduro announced that elections for governors, mayors, councilors and regional deputies will be held next year in the country.
“The mega-elections of 23 governors per state, 335 mayors, 23 Legislative Councils and 335 Municipal Councils are coming up. In 12 months we will be in elections again,” said Maduro, during the XI Extraordinary Summit of ALBA-TCP held virtually this Monday, August 26.
The Venezuelan head of state said that those who did not comply with the law would not be able to participate. “Those who do not recognize the powers of the state will not be able to participate in any electoral process, a word to the wise,” he added. This is referencing the refusal of the far-right to recognize Maduro’s legitimate victory in the 28 July elections.
However, he said that the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) is preparing all its electoral machinery for this great electoral event. “We are re-engineering the machinery, the 1 x 10 x 7, to see what the method will be, who the candidates will be,” he explained.
Venezuela: 2nd National Consultation to Yield Improvements in Services Provided by the State
Criticizing media censorship
Referring to the 2nd National Popular Consultation 2024, he claimed that media outlets had rendered it invisible through their censorship of the event, based on a media campaign to conceal the truth.
“We experienced a beautiful popular neighborhood celebration, as we conducted the Second Popular Consultation for voting on community projects in 4,500 communal circuits,” he added.
He indicated that in Venezuela, a dignified and true democracy is being consolidated, with new formulas emerging from the Bolivarian Revolution and Chavista doctrine, forged by our experiences and rooted in our heritage. “This milestone is the dream of direct democracy, which is expressed in the Constitution,” he added.
