The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, condemned the US House of Representatives’ initiative to impose a 5% tax on remittances sent by migrants to the country.
She called the initiative, promoted by Republican Congressman Jason Smith, “unfair and discriminatory.”
“Yesterday, a [Mexican] Senate committee discussed the 5% tax on remittances, and we all agree that they should not be taxed,” said the Mexican president during her morning press conference on Wednesday, May 14.
In this regard, President Sheinbaum announced that the Mexican Senate sent a letter to the US House of Representatives expressing its disapproval for “The one big beautiful bill” that seeks to tax remittances.
“How can they tax remittances when Mexicans already pay taxes there, whether they are documented or not?” Sheinbaum asked. “There are some states that already tax remittances. This would be a double burden and an injustice. It is discriminatory.”

In the letter sent to the United States, the Mexican Senate called for a reconsideration of the proposal, “since technical projections show that the imposition of a tax or tariff on remittances would only discourage the use of regular and formal channels” to send outward remittances from the US.
Desde el Senado de la RepĂşblica expresamos nuestro desacuerdo con la propuesta que busca gravar al 5% las remesas enviadas por nuestros paisanos en EEUU.

“We call on the US Legislature to thoughtfully reconsider this proposal that would damage the economy of our countries and that, moreover, is contrary to the spirit of economic freedom that the US government claims to defend,” reads the letter.
Sheinbaum reiterated her government’s commitment to maintaining a relationship of respect and cooperation with the United States.
