During a bilateral meeting with Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, praised former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.
“We remember our friend Hugo Chávez, who was a brilliant leader for all Latin America,” said Putin. “Undoubtedly, he was our friend. Today, you are continuing his cause, and we wish you the best,” Putin said to Maduro during their official bilateral meeting on Wednesday, May 7, in Moscow.
President Maduro arrived in the Russian capital on Wednesday accompanied by a large delegation, including ministers and high-ranking military officials. The Venezuelan president will participate in the May 9 commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.
Presidents Maduro and Putin Meet in Russia and Sign Mutual Strategic Cooperation Agreements
In addition, Venezuela and Russia signed a historic strategic agreement. The foreign affairs minister of Venezuela, Yván Gil, highlighted the importance of this meeting: “Today, after 25 years of close cooperation thanks to the arrival of Commander Chávez and President Putin, a strategic cooperation treaty has been signed which takes us to the highest level of collaboration.”
Foreign Minister Gil emphasized that this new agreement has a long-term projection: “We are talking about a treaty of 10 years, extendable for 5 more years, which will allow us to accelerate the pace in difficult times when there are attempts to impose on and bend people’s will.”
He stressed that the two countries have achieved an “important milestone,” with more than 350 agreements in areas such as energy, health, science, technology, and pharmaceuticals.
In addition to President Maduro, several international leaders will attend the May 9 celebrations, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Cuban President Miguel DĂaz-Canel, as well as the heads of state of Serbia, Slovakia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, and the Central Asian nations. May 9 represents one of the most important dates in Russia, commemorating the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War.
The war began on June 22, 1941, with the German invasion of the USSR, and ended with the capitulation of the Nazi regime in Berlin on May 8/9, 1945. At the time of the capitulation, due to the time difference, it was May 9 in Moscow and May 8 in Western Europe.
