Venezuela has been selected for the vice presidency of the United Nations General Assembly for Latin America and the Caribbean for the 79th session of the UNGA. This is the first time Venezuela has assumed this role at the United Nations.
At an ordinary session of the UN General Assembly on June 6, Venezuela was selected nearly unanimously, with the United States being the only UN member state that opposed the selection, citing its non-recognition of the constitutional government of Venezuela led by President Nicolás Maduro.
US Republican Senator Marco Rubio attacked the United Nations for selecting Venezuela to lead one of its vice presidencies.
Marco Rubio has been one of the main architects and promoters of the US blockade against Venezuela. A significant part of his political activity revolves around lobbying the US government so that it does not repeal any unilateral coercive measures imposed on Venezuela.
Now, in response to the UN General Assembly selecting Venezuela to lead its vice presidency for Latin America and the Caribbean, Rubio urged the president of the United States, Joe Biden, to eliminate funds for the UN.

The Republican senator also condemned the appointment of the permanent representative of Venezuela to the United Nations, Samuel Moncada, as vice-president of one of the Assemblies.
Moncada responded by calling Rubio an “extortionist” who is asking the US government to cancel funds destined to the United Nations.

“Rubio failed with his puppet GuaidĂł when he wanted to invade Venezuela. Now, frustrated by our victory, he wants to sanction everyone,” Moncada wrote on X.
In his statement, Rubio also expressed “concern” as the UN General Assembly adopted resolutions that, in his opinion, “condemn Israel’s right to defend itself” and recognize Palestinian statehood.
Referring to this, Moncada commented that Rubio thinks that the people of Venezuela and Palestine have no rights.
“He is trying to extort the UN to shut us all up,” Moncada wrote. “He could not defeat Venezuela, and he will not be able to defeat Palestine.”
