On Wednesday, the attorney general of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, established the Committee for Justice for the Victims of July 2024 to render justice to those who were affected by the terrorist attacks perpetrated after the presidential elections.
“We wanted to present to the Venezuelan people, and to make visible in a clear and unequivocal way, a fact that has been manipulated and distorted by the major international media, who speak in a partial, biased and distorted way about what happened on July 28th,” said Saab during a press conference.
Saab explained how, through the committee, he will review all cases, and he guaranteed that there will be justice for the 28 Venezuelans killed and 195 Venezuelans injured during post-electoral violence.
He also indicated that the ultimate goal of this committee is to directly and personally address each case with the objective that these serious events do not go unpunished.
“They want to use these martyrs in these unfortunate events of July 28, 29 ,and 30 as if they were the mourners, when they were the ones who promoted and encouraged the violence through the so-called commandos,” said Saab.
He mentioned that the government has not ruled further releases of those detained for the violent events of July 29th and 30th.
He specified that if there is no evidence that determines the alleged responsibility of any detainee in the acts of violence, they may be released. However, he clarified that if they are found guilty, they will be subject to legal action.
He detailed that, to date, the government has granted precautionary measures to 225 people who were imprisoned.
“Those who are found guilty through investigations will be given their corresponding sentence,” said the head of the Public Ministry.
He added that the ministry has completed a total of 1,192 expert reports and 107 medical examinations on the detainees involved in these events.
Saab criticized the media for trying to present those responsible for the violent events as victims:
“They are shown as if they were the victims when they were the ones who promoted and encouraged the violence; they were the ones who instructed the so-called commandos to take the country by storm, and the state’s rapid action was what prevented this from escalating.”
