Venezuelan Vice President Delcy RodrĂguez held a meeting with government ministers and other authorities to assess the country’s energy situation and establish new guidelines for social protection. During the meeting, it was agreed to extend for two weeks the Electricity Savings Plan, implemented in March in response to climate change.
In addition, during the meeting held on Friday, May 2, disaster management strategies for the rainy season were reviewed. The technical teams presented measures to ensure the safety of the people and mitigate potential impacts on vulnerable groups.
At the moment of the launching of the Electricity Savings Plan, on March 24, Venezuelan authorities explained that it was in response to the global climate emergency and particularly its impact on the hydroelectric systems in the Andean region.
However, the rainy season has arrived on time and has been going on strongly since the last week of April, especially in the Andean mountainous region of Venezuela.
According to several analysts, the steady economic recovery of Venezuela, together with the lack of major investments to improve electricity generation in the country and very low prices, might be the reason for the recent energy-saving decisions taken by the Venezuelan government, which faces new US sanctions affecting the country’s foreign revenues.
The authorities participating in the meeting highlighted the economic and social policies implemented by the national government. They emphasized the strengthening of productive forces, focused on generating foreign currency for the country in a context of global challenges, as well as the direct support mechanisms for citizens.
Other issues
In the economic sphere, the growth experienced by various sectors during the first quarter of the year was highlighted, with evident progress in national production. In the social sphere, authorities reported a 22% reduction in maternal mortality so far this year, reflecting efforts in improving healthcare.
Likewise, the participation of more than two million students from 16,000 educational institutions in the 19th National Student Sports was recognized. The initiative promotes the comprehensive development of Venezuelan youth and their integration through sports.
