Opposition politician and president of the think tank International Center for Public Policy (IDEFEC), Eduardo Fernández, proposed the creation of a new mechanism to elect an opposition presidential candidate, who could receive the support of broad sectors of the Venezuelan opposition.
Fernández, in an interview with Globovisión, highlighted the need to unite “representative people” from all sectors and to tell them that they have “the opportunity to change everything through a great agreement.”
“A conclave can be created, calling representatives of the economic, productive, workers, teachers, academics, university and Church sectors,” he said. “And they should be told, look, ladies and gentlemen, here we have the opportunity to change. We are going to achieve it through an agreement about a candidate.”

🗣 Permitiría garantizar un triunfo muy amplio, que se transfiera el poder y facilidad para gobernar.

In his opinion, through this mechanism the opposition will be able to achieve three things: guarantee a resounding electoral triumph, have the ability to transfer power after winning the elections, and facilitate negotiations so that there is a climate of tranquility.
According to Fernández, an opposition victory will allow the construction of a great consensus that will help to solve the problems of poverty, hunger, and public services.
Fernández stated that 2024 is a very important year for Venezuelans because it is a great opportunity for the immense and overwhelming majority that wants a political change, according to him.
Eduardo Fernández’s proposal comes in the midst of the political labyrinth in which the opposition finds itself at the moment in view of the presidential elections this year. María Corina Machado is the self-proclaimed pre-candidate of the opposition, but she is disqualified from holding public office for 15 years.
Recently, the first vice-president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, commented that the Unitary Platform of the far-right opposition is considering the possibility that Machado will not be the candidate, and another candidate has to be chosen.
In Cabello’s opinion, when the time comes to nominate a candidate for the presidential elections, the opposition sector may try to impose the former mayor of the municipality of Baruta, Gerardo Blyde, whose name would be proposed by Democratic Action leader Henry Ramos Allup.
