On the night of April 1, Venezuela’s minister of communications, Jorge Rodríguez, reported one new case of Covid-19 coronavirus registered in the country, bringing the total to 144.

He said the new case is a 46-year-old lawyer from Nueva Esparta state who is currently being held at a Comprehensive Diagnostic Center (CDI) where he is receiving full care. He was admitted on 27 March with respiratory problems and other symptoms. He took a rapid diagnostic test, which was positive, and then underwent a confirmatory PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test.

He said the decrease in diagnosed cases “does not mean we have beaten the pandemic,” but according to experts advising the Venezuelan government, the pandemic is being fought in three stages:

Containment, flattening the curve to avoid exponential growth, which according to Rodriguez is the stage we are in now and “it seems that we are overcoming it.
Break the chain of transmission. “We’re not there yet, although the numbers show that some states have made it,” the minister said.
The ultimate control of the pandemic.

“Once control is achieved, we will move to a monitored normality to avoid situations of outbreaks and setbacks in the control of the pandemic,” the minister said. He then urged that quarantine measures be maintained by the population.

Rodriguez reported on a 34-year-old pregnant woman, who was diagnosed with Covid-19, which was reported yesterday and was infected by a relative who traveled to Peru. “I must say that yesterday, at the Victorino Santaella hospital, the c-section was performed on this person and she gave birth to a very healthy baby weighing 3 kilos 200 grams”. He pointed out that the baby’s rapid Covid-19 test was negative and all measures are being taken to prevent his mother from transmitting the infection.
