Venezuelan Minister of Transport Ramón Velásquez Araguayán reported that the suspension of flights with Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Chile remains in place in order to prevent people with “nefarious intentions” from entering the country.
In statements to the media on Wednesday, October 2, the minister stated that the Venezuelan authorities are conducting a “thorough check of all passengers entering Venezuela” and the decision to suspend passenger flights with Panama, Dominican Republic, Peru, and Chile is “a policy to protect the people.”
He added that for now it is a “question of security” to maintain control over who enters Venezuela, irrespective of whether they are Venezuelan citizens or foreigners.
As for when the flights may resume, he stated that the Venezuelan authorities are maintaining communication with the airlines, “because we know that it is a supply and demand situation. We hope to return to the frequency of flights that we had within a reasonable time.”
The minister highlighted that only passenger flights have been suspended, but commercial flights with the aforementioned countries remain operational. He stressed that the binational trade relations as well as the economic and commercial exchanges remain intact, as per instructions from President Nicolás Maduro.
