The president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, stated that the fundamental objective of the proposed Law for the Defense of Political Sovereignty and National Self-Determination is to safeguard peace.
During a press conference at the National Assembly on Wednesday, October 16, he explained that one of the main proposals that has emerged from the discussions of the constitutional committees on the electoral law reform is the creation of this new law, with the aim of avoiding, preventing, and stopping the misuse the political channels provided by the Constitution for conspiracy, treason, violence, calls for invasions, etc.
“It cannot be tolerated that a political group calls for violence in the streets, and it is the common citizen who ends up with the dead, the blood, and the turmoil while the criminals are happily in Madrid or hiding under the bed in an embassy,” Rodríguez said, referring to the far-right politicians María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia. “There must be some responsibility. Such situations cannot be allowed to happen.”
He explained that the aim of the proposed law is to safeguard the exercise of political sovereignty and national self-determination from foreign interference. Foreign interference includes economic aid or financial contributions to political parties, individuals who engage in political activities, as well as the participation of foreigners who, under the guise of sponsorship to these organizations, may undermine the functioning of the organizations of the Republic.
President Maduro: Far-Right Venezuelan Politician María Corina Machado Flees to Spain
“We cannot allow a mercenary to come say that he is going to collect some money to come and kill the president or other official,” Rodríguez emphasized. “This cannot go on. Can you imagine a fundraiser in Kazakhstan to go to the United States to assassinate a political figure in that country? So, this proposed law is primarily to protect peace. The criminals produce cannon fodder. Who pays for those victims, who takes responsibility?”
President Maduro will be sworn in on January 10
Jorge Rodríguez read the letter sent to President Nicolás Maduro, inviting him to the Federal Legislative Palace, the seat of the National Assembly, on January 10, 2025, “to attend as the elected candidate from the July 28 election, to take the oath of office as the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for the 2025-2031 term on January 10, 2025, as established in the Constitution.”
Rodríguez also showed the letter to the media during the press conference.
This comes after the announcement made on Tuesday by President Maduro, where he acknowledged the receipt of the letter and stated that he would go to the National Assembly on January 10 to take oath.
