Venezuela established Sovereignty and Peace Councils in all of its 24 states in response to recent US military threats against the country. Announcing the initiative, the secretary of the National Council for Sovereignty and Peace, Jorge RodrĂguez, explained that it is aimed at defending the country’s sovereignty against external threats and to transcend the National Assembly by including all sectors of society.
During his address on Wednesday, September 24, RodrĂguez, the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, stated that “Venezuela is united in a single purpose: to defend our right to live in peace and tranquility.”

The initiative arises as a response to the deployment of US forces in the southern Caribbean under the pretext of combating drug trafficking and US military attacks on alleged “drug boats” from Venezuela.
In this regard, RodrĂguez said that the US actions are part of a strategy of systematic aggression aimed at fostering disunity among Venezuelans and paving the way for US corporate control over the nation’s immense natural resources.
Therefore, he underscored the need to seek common ground and consensus in Venezuelan society, without any political pressure, in order to ensure stability and the normal functioning of activities.

The National Council for Sovereignty and Peace is a national coordination mechanism to safeguard the country’s stability. RodrĂguez also highlighted “the importance of meeting with mayors and representatives” to strengthen the defense of the country.
“This is a country that has the right to be prosperous and it will achieve prosperity, irrespective of any threat,” he emphasized.
On September 16, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro presided over the inauguration of the National Council for Sovereignty and Peace, with the participation of 434 representatives from key sectors of the country. The primary objective of the body is strengthening the defense of sovereignty and peace in the face of growing US aggression.
At that meeting, RodrĂguez highlighted the participation of Venezuelan society, noting that it represents “the millions of Venezuelan souls who love our territory.”
