The Chinese government urged the United States to immediately lift the “illegal and unilateral” sanctions imposed on Venezuela and Cuba, and to do more to facilitate peace and development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
On Friday, November 28, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said that China opposes unilateral sanctions that violate international law and are not authorized by the United Nations Security Council. The spokesperson also condemned US interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs.
The statements come after Washington’s decision to designate the non-existent Cartel de los Soles as a terrorist organization, something that both the Chinese and Venezuelan governments call a propaganda narrative fabricated by the United States to justify an invasion of Venezuela.
Regarding Cuba, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun urged the US authorities to heed the international community’s call for justice and remove Cuba from the “State Sponsors of Terrorism” list.

Guo stated that the UN Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan’s preliminary report fully aligns with the recent General Assembly resolution urging Washington to end its blockade against Cuba, noting that the unilateral coercive measures have serious repercussions for the island’s economy and humanitarian situation.
Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister Bruno RodrĂguez thanked China for its firm and sustained position against the United States’ hostile policies.
The Chinese declaration comes in a context of heightened tensions, as US President Donald Trump has announced a possible ground incursion into Venezuela. China’s support for Cuba and Venezuela reinforces the voice of the Global South and the condemnation of unilateral coercive measures, positioning China as a key actor against hegemonic interference in Latin America.
