On Tuesday, the National Assembly of Venezuela approved, in its first discussion, a law repealing Venezuela’s approval of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Deputy Roy Daza presented the proposal, emphasizing the importance of this legal decision and noting that the Rome Statute “should serve as a guarantor of justice” and “should serve as a guarantor of due process” but instead is being used for purposes “other than what it was created for.”
Deputy Daza also argued that “the International Court was created with one objective, and now it turns out it has others,” such as serving imperialism and not justice as it should be.
Venezuela, guarantor of human rights
The deputy emphasized that human rights are respected in Venezuela and that the main guarantor of these rights is President Nicolás Maduro, who on more than one occasion opened the doors to the ICC commissioner to carry out the investigations he deemed necessary; however, these investigations were not carried out, and an attempt was made to create a narrative to misrepresent the facts regarding Venezuela.
“We do know what the fight for human rights is,” said Daza. “We raise the banner of the fight for human rights.”
He added that “all of us here, all the people watching us, and the world knows that today we are under political, media, military, and economic pressure, but there is also an attempt to introduce this element of turning ICC’s actions into a tool of political pressure on the country.”
Deputy Daza noted that in Venezuela, the ICC will not be allowed to interfere with the country’s legislation, since there is a democracy and a duly constituted government.

“There is a biased position on the part of the International Criminal Court, and that is why we are proposing to this Assembly the repeal of this instrument,” added Deputy Daza.
Once this proposed law is approved, the document will be sent to Venezuela’s Standing Committee on Foreign Policy, Sovereignty, and Integration of the National Assembly, as well as to the Committee on Internal Policy, for the purpose of preparing a corresponding report.
