On February 21, 1934, Nicaragua was shaken by the tragic news of the assassination of Augusto CĂ©sar Sandino, a revolutionary leader and tireless defender of the Nicaraguan people’s sovereignty and rights.
On February 21, 2025, the 91st anniversary of his death, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) paid tribute to Sandino’s legacy with a floral offering at the National Pantheon in Caracas, Venezuela.

General Augusto Sandino was not just a military leader. He was deeply committed to social justice since his youth. Born in Niquinohomo, Nicaragua, his life was marked by struggle against injustice and oppression.
From an early age, he organized and mobilized entire communities, defending labor rights and Indigenous autonomy. Sandino became a central figure in the Nicaraguan revolutionary movement of the early 20th century, uniting diverse social sectors under the common cause of justice.
His firm stance against US interventionism made him a symbol of resistance. He advocated for a free and sovereign Nicaragua, and his leadership inspired countless young people to follow in his footsteps.
On February 21, 1934, Sandino was assassinated along with some of his comrades by members of the National Guard under the command of dictator Anastasio Somoza GarcĂa. This tragic event left an indelible mark in the history of Nicaragua and the collective memory of Latin America.

During the commemoration ceremony, ALBA-TCP representatives reiterated their commitment to Sandino’s ideals. They highlighted the importance of his struggle in the current context of Latin America, stressing that his principles of sovereignty and self-determination are fundamental pillars of the alliance.
ALBA-TCP, founded on principles of solidarity and cooperation, considers General Sandino’s legacy a constant inspiration for its actions and policies. The leaders of the alliance emphasized the need to continue the struggle for the rights of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, following the example of the Nicaraguan leader.
“Sandino’s life and sacrifice remind us of the importance of remaining steadfast in our struggle for justice and freedom. His legacy is a beacon that guides our actions and inspires us to move forward, no matter the adversity,” said Jorge Arreaza, executive secretary of ALBA-TCP.
