This weekend, Venezuelan far-right opposition supporters flooded social media platforms expressing their deep concern and severe confusion upon learning of the flight of former candidate Edmundo González from Venezuela to Spain after receiving a safe passage approved by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
On Saturday night, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez reported that González had left the country after receiving political asylum in the Kingdom of Spain. Following diplomatic protocols and respecting human rights to asylum, the former candidate had been allowed to leave the country with his wife.
Venezuela’s Far-Right Former Presidential Candidate Flees to Spain, Granted Asylum
This action left some opposition supporters baffled, and they expressed it on their social media accounts. Many said that they felt deceived once again by the leaders of the Venezuelan far-right opposition. The same thing happened when the supporters placed their hopes and trust in the “interim” government headed by Juan Guaidó, leaving them feeling frustrated at this his lack of commitment to follow through on the coup against the majority of the Venezuelan people who voted for President Maduro.
Others expressed their anger and indignation at González’s decision to abandon them in their fight against the government of Nicolás Maduro. Some were waiting for responses from the far-right politician María Corina Machado on the matter and demanded to know what steps they should take after this situation, because they felt directionless and leaderless.
The full cry
It is worth noting that the same users, content creators, and influencers who did not recognize the presidential election results and called for violence among Venezuelans now find themselves helpless as their same pseudo-leaders have left them adrift.
@ladivaza Esto se acabó? #venezuela 😭
The disappointment, distrust, and indignation are evident in the hundreds of messages that could be read on Saturday night while Edmundo González and his wife were checking their bags at the airport.
