The foreign minister of Venezuela, Yván Gil, reported that he had a telephone conversation with his counterpart from the Kingdom of Spain, José Manuel Albares, where he confirmed that “Venezuela will not tolerate an escalation of aggression and interference from Spain, which in recent years has become a refuge for terrorists and criminals linked to fascism in our country.”
The information was released this Tuesday, September 17, by the head of Venezuelan foreign ministry through a post published on his Telegram account where he let the Spanish foreign minister know that Venezuela is ready to take actions to safeguard its sovereignty. “The disregard for our constitutional institutions is a red line, a Guaidó 2.0 will fail again.”
“We have dismantled and revealed a terrorist plot, which sought to attack the people, assassinate the President, Vice President and other officials, led by an active US military officer and with Spanish nationals involved who have been publicly named by our Ministry of the Interior, Justice and Peace. Preliminary investigations implicate these citizens of Spain in the terrorist plot, who also have links with the Spanish National Intelligence Centre (CNI),” he told Minister Albares directly during the phone conversation.
Gil urged the Spanish government to immediately rectify its position and to condemn terrorism unambiguously and to assume its commitments under international law.
“The Bolivarian Revolution, as it has historically demonstrated, will act under the principles of justice, respect for international law, human rights and peace diplomacy, and will know how to defend with strenght and courage the independence and sovereignty achieved more than 200 years ago,” he added.
The reaction of Foreign Minister Gil is due to a request made by his Spanish counterpart who asked Venezuela to confirm the identity of two Spanish citizens who are being held in Venezuela, reported the EFE news agency.
Albares denied that the two arrested men have any ties to the government in Spain, “and much less” to the Spanish National Intelligence Centre (CNI).
In this regard, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs pointed out that Spain will provide diplomatic and consular protection for the detainees, “as always” the Foreign Ministry does with all detainees of Spanish nationality abroad.
Background
Last Saturday, September 14, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, reported on the arrest of 14 people, mercenaries linked to a plan to commit terrorist actions.
Four Facts About New US/Spain-Led Mercenary Plot Against Venezuela
In a press conference, Cabello explained that for some time now there have been groups around the world offering to supposedly “liberate” Venezuela, but “they never act alone. Behind these groups operate intelligence agencies from other countries.”
“Today we have captured, under the control of the national government and in custody, being interrogated, complying with what other countries do not comply with, respect for human rights, mercenary citizens who have come to Venezuela as part of this plan,” he said.
Cabello said that two Spanish citizens, identified as José María Basoa Valdovinos and Andrés Martínez Adasme, were recently detained near the airport in Puerto Ayacucho, the capital of Amazonas state just miles from the Colombian border.
