Marco Rubio, the secretary of state for the US empire, has threatened Venezuela with “severe sanctions” if it refuses to accept deportation flights returning its citizens from the US entity.
Despite Venezuelan authorities announcing the resumption of Return to the Homeland flights since last week, so far no additional flights have landed in Venezuela. Last week, a scheduled flight from the program was canceled due to adverse weather conditions.
“Venezuela is obligated to accept its citizens being repatriated from the United States. This is not a matter for debate or negotiation. Nor does it deserve any reward,” Rubio wrote on social media, despite the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announcing the previous day that all Venezuelan migrants will be brought back home via the Return to the Homeland program.
Rubio reiterated that if the Venezuelan government does not accept “a steady stream of deportation flights, without further excuses or delays, the US will impose new, severe, and escalating sanctions.”

US President Donald Trump, despite a federal judge’s prohibitions, has notably invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 against Venezuelan migrants last week, claiming the US settler colony was facing an “invasion” by the criminal gang Tren de Aragua.
However, the Trump administration failed to provide any evidence for these allegations. Rubio, now serving as Trump’s secretary of state, had also previously admitted during an interview that of the 238 Venezuelans transferred to a prison in El Salvador, some likely had no ties at all to Tren de Aragua.
Since the news emerged, the Venezuelan government has insisted the migrants have been unlawfully detained, and vowed to appeal to international organizations to report crimes against humanity.
During a demonstration in Caracas this Tuesday, President Nicolás Maduro reaffirmed his commitment to securing the return of those transferred to El Salvador. “We will do whatever is necessary to rescue our children,” he declared, “they are not criminals; they are innocent. We Venezuelans are good people.”
