Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that her government will maintain an “impartial” stance on the results of Venezuela’s July 28 elections, a position different to those of Colombia and Brazil, and consistent with the constitution of México.
“From now on, we are going to remain impartial in this regard,” she said in statements to the media on Tuesday, October 15. “So Colombia has a position, Brazil has a position, the US has its own position, and our position is constitutional.”
The Mexican president recalled that her country’s constitution prohibits her from intervening in the internal affairs of other sovereign states.
“We have, according to our Constitution, a very clear definition of foreign policy, which is the self-determination of peoples,” she explained. “Initially, after the election in Venezuela, there was a call from the three aforementioned countries for transparency in the election results.”
This is the first time that Sheinbaum has spoken out about the Venezuelan elections since taking office as Mexican president on October 1.

On July 28, the Venezuelan people re-elected the current president, Nicolás Maduro, with 51.95% of the votes, compared to 43.18% for his closest contender, the far-right Edmundo González. In the face of the electoral controversy generated by the far-right opposition extremists, President Maduro asked the Venezuelan Supreme Court (TSJ) to resolve the results through an examination, which ratified the electoral results.
The Venezuelan far-right opposition has been claiming that the government should publish detailed electoral minutes, something that has never been done in Venezuela’s electoral history. Meanwhile, the National Electoral Council has not yet made public the detailed electoral results that were mandated by the TSJ ruling that ratified Maduro’s victory, thus feeding into the controversy around the electoral results that many analysts consider were a clear victory for President Maduro.
