The president-elect of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, announced the names of six members of her cabinet. They will be Marcelo Ebrard as secretary of Economy; Rosaura Ruiz as secretary of Humanities, Technology and Innovation (newly created secretariat); Juan Ramón de la Fuente as secretary of Foreign Affairs; Alicia Bárcena as secretary of Environment and Natural Resources; Julio Berdegue as secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development; and Ernestina Godoy as legal advisor of the president.
These are the first six appointments of her cabinet, who will be in charge of the transition process, in coordination with their respective peers in the current government headed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“Today I present three men and three women who will form part of the cabinet that will accompany me from October 1, 2024,” Sheinbaum said on Thursday, June 20, at a press conference.
“They are all clear about the principles and foundations of the Fourth Transformation movement and are committed to shared prosperity, to the humanist principle of for the good of all, but above all the poor, and they know that republican austerity will continue,” she added.
She further added that her team will continue from what has been achieved by President AndrĂ©s Manuel LĂłpez Obrador in order to build the “second floor” of the Fourth Transformation.
“Our goal is not only growth, but shared development and we will not betray the popular mandate” that she received in the presidential elections of June 2.
“They are first-class women and men, I feel very honored that they have agreed to be part of the second floor of the Fourth Transformation,” Sheinbaum said, referring to the first six members of her government.
She added that next Thursday she will announce the names of six more members of her government.
On behalf of the members of the next cabinet, Ebrard thanked Sheinbaum for putting her confidence in him and his colleagues. “We will dedicate ourselves to fulfill the objectives that encouraged the vote in the last elections, to build the second floor of the fourth transformation, in the conditions that we are going to face because we live in a more protectionist and more unstable world,” he said.
“In my case,” he said, “I will carry out the shared prosperity proposed by Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum.”
“We have the best economic results for half a century; we have trade agreements, being the main trading partner of the United States; the renewal of the USMC free trade agreement is coming, which is my turn to lead,” Ebrard added. “We are going to translate it into well-being and shared prosperity.”
He thanked Sheinbaum for inviting him and his five colleagues to be part of her cabinet. “Thank you for your trust. We will always keep in mind not to lie, not to steal, and not to deceive the people of Mexico,” he said.
