The Mexican government responded to threats of mass deportation by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, by stating that Mexico will support its fellow citizens through the program “Mexico Embraces You.”
Secretary of the Interior of Mexico Rosa Icela Rodríguez announced that President Claudia Sheinbaum will assist the migrants deported by Trump; since Trump’s victory was announced, Sheinbaum’s administration has been planning strategies to aid Mexicans in the US or returning from the US.
“Mexico will do everything necessary to defend, care for, and allocate whatever is needed to receive those who are repatriated in order to achieve their reincorporation into their native country,” said Rodríguez.
She pointed out that although they do not agree with the deportations, they will guarantee access to the welfare programs of the government of Mexico, which includes health, transportation to their places of origin, and access to telephone communications.
The Mexican official explained that the “Mexico Embraces You” plan will work through the National Migration Institute, which will be in charge of receiving Mexican migrants, processing their repatriation documents, and supporting them in their transfers to their places of origin.
In addition, the National Population Registry will process identity documents if necessary.
The government will even provide Mexican migrants who are deported a card with 2,000 Mexican pesos (US $100) to use during their transfer to their place of origin.
“Our compatriots who live in the United States have played a very important role throughout history in the economies of both countries,” said Rosa Icela Rodríguez. “They are women and men who strive every day to improve the living conditions of their families.”
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her government is prepared for the possible mass deportation that Donald Trump has promised.
In her message to Mexican migrants, she assured them that they are not alone but that they must remain calm.
“We want you to know that we are prepared, that we are ready, to support our fellow citizens, and we are certain that we will reach agreements with President Trump’s government once the appropriate channels are established,” the Mexican president said.
It is worth remembering that this Monday, after his inauguration, Trump announced that he will declare a “national emergency” on the southern border and declare the Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations.
