Caracas (OrinocoTribune.com)âVenezuela welcomed, with hope, the ceasefire following the unjustified aggression perpetrated by the Israel colony and the US against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
On Tuesday, June 24, Venezuelan Foreign Minister YvĂĄn Gil noted in a public statement that the ceasefire is an essential step in halting escalation that threatens to destabilize West Asia. FM Gil emphasized that the crisis was triggered by the Zionist attacks against Iran and escalated with the bombing of nuclear facilities in Iran by the US and the Israelis. FM Gil referred to these attacks as flagrant violations of international law.
On Monday night, US President Donald Trump claimed on his social media platform that a “complete and total” ceasefire had been reached between Iran and Israel, ending a 12-day war. The Israeli colony, with US assistance, ignited the conflict with an “unprovoked and unlawful aggression,” in the words of FM Gil, on June 13.
Prior to Trump’s declaration, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issed a statement clarifying that no ceasefire agreement existed at that time. He added Iran would end its response if Israel halted aggression “no later than 4 a.m. Tehran time,” on Tuesday.
These developments occurred hours after Iranian forces launched missiles at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, headquarters of US Central Command (CENTCOM). Iran stated this was retaliation for the US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday.
Below is the full unofficial translation of Venezuela’s statement:
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela welcomes with hope and commitment the announced ceasefire and hostilities resulting from the unjustified aggression by Israel and the United States of America against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which has been announced by the parties in recent hours.
This ceasefire is an essential step to halt the escalation that threatened to destabilize all of West Asia. The current crisis was triggered by the attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the bombing of nuclear facilities on its territory, which represents a serious violation of international law.
Venezuela reaffirms that this cessation of hostilities must be the starting point for a structural and lasting solution. As President NicolĂĄs Maduro Moros proposed on June 23, it is urgent to activate a multilateral mechanism to convene a Summit for Peace and Against War in West Asia.
In light of recent events, the Venezuelan government welcomes the telephone conversation between His Highness the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the President of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian. We reaffirm the value of this direct dialogue and the commitment to good neighborliness for the sake of uniting the peoples of the Muslim world.
Venezuela maintains its unwavering commitment to peace, people’s sovereignty, and multilateralism.
Today, 204 years after the historic victory at the Battle of Carabobo, we say with Father BolĂvar: “Peace will be my haven, my glory, my reward, my hope, my joy, and all that is precious in the world.”
