* “Whoever falls”

January 8, 2019

By Eleazar Díaz Rangel.-

The problem is old, it comes from much earlier. In times of representative democracy [before Chavez] it was a crisis. Rómulo Betancourt when taking power said that his hands would burn if accusations of corruption arose. And after a few days his hands were burned, in the attack of June 1960. Dr Ramón J. Velázquez told me once that Luis Beltrán Prieto told him that he had informed President Raúl Leoni that his Minister of Defense had left with 60 million bolivars, and Leoni replied: “And you think I do not know? That is the price that must be paid for the stability of democracy. ” The media barely reported on such a serious matter.

The government of President Hugo Chávez received that damn legacy. Newly elected I interviewed him and he described it as a monster with a thousand heads, “you have to be careful with the corruption that got everywhere.” Later, convinced of its seriousness, called a crusade to combat corruption, and later, more informed of what was happening, reported that the Prosecutor’s Office dismissed 2,443 cases of corruption, and admitted that “We were swallowed by the corruption that infiltrated the PSUV. ” Little could be done. Years later it was learned that the National Treasurer was an exoficial who was a great thief, now protected in the US.

How many times has President Nicolás Maduro denounced the situation and asked for support to eradicate it? The Prosecutor General’s Office was encouraged by him to investigate, and there have been cases of civil servants, all civilians, involved in serious crimes. It is necessary to expand that spectrum. On December 20, he again raised the issue as the third line of action (the first two: politics, and economy) for 2019. This time he called for a war on corruption and appointed Executive Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to design a popular national plan “to capture, prosecute and punish the bandits and corrupt people of this country, infiltrated in public office.”

If he chose Delcy, he must have done so conscious of her capacity every time he has designated her to face certain situations. And she, for her part, today must be aware of the difficult and complex issue she has in her hands, which needs the support of many and which is committed to informing the President and the country of the results of such a demanding mission. I believe that workers, through their unions, should be a fundamental factor in that struggle, as well as other social sectors. If that fight really will be fought “no matter who falls”, demand the support of all.

January 10

January 10 is a day that has been filled with expectations. It is a day of speculation like that the National Assembly will elect a provisional government, and it will be of realities, of concrete facts, for example, Nicolás Maduro will be sworn in as Constitutional President for a second term. And that swearing, I suppose, will be done in the protocolary stage of the National Constituent Assembly, and simultaneously before a crowd rarely seen in Caracas with a crowd from all over the country. And what will the opponents do abroad? And I do not ask what they will do in the country, because the oppositions lack the strength to do anything. On the other hand, the foreign ministers of the Lima Group will decide whether to remove their ambassadors or if they go further and break relations. Nor is it known what Washington will do, which is decisive because it will affect what Limeños are going to do, they will not take a step without hearing the voice of the master.

  • The Beijing government took advantage of the end of 2018 to resume its campaign for the recognition of Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic of China. They recalled that only 17 of the more than one hundred countries in the world, maintain relations with that country. If something is handled with wisdom the leaders of the RPCH is patience.
<li></li>
  • At last a UN voice was heard before the dramatic situation in Colombia. Ending 2018, it issued a statement expressing alarm over the murders of social leaders in Colombia. But they did not dare to say anything else.
<li></li>
  • The Peruvian government presented a bill before Congress to dismiss Attorney General Pedro Chavarry for firing three prosecutors who were seriously investigating Odebrecht corruption.
<li></li>
  • I’m returning from Barinitas, where I received the new year. First of all, I must write down the good condition of the José Antonio Páez highway, not a single interruption. The landscape of the plain in Portuguesa lands is interrupted by a Yutong bus cemetery, and two or three lines of cars pouring gasoline. And the sign that I saw the most repeated was “Si hay punto”[you can pay with you bank card]. It’s amazing how that form of buying and selling has expanded. Even the most humble “areperas” use it.
<li></li>
  • Who carried out the works of the highway before the tunnel of La Cabrera, coming from Valencia; weeks [actually almost 2 years] with the interrupted transit, and left it full of holes and hollows [this is a monumento of mismanagement and mistreatment of people]. And arriving in Caracas, the braking ramp is abandoned, until a fatal accident occurs.
<li></li>
  • It is of suppose the surprise of the deputies to the National Assembly of Cuba, that had advanced approving in the Constitution that the marriage can occur between two people (of the sanen sex), and in the popular consultation the proposal that must be between a man and a woman, got 192,408 votes, the highest vote. What will happen on February 24 when it goes through a referendum?
