The Government of Mexico offers itself as a mediator in Venezuela and Nicaragua with full respect for the principle of non-intervention, in case it is required.
The Under Secretary for the Latin American and Caribbean Region of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Maximiliano Reyes Zúñiga, has indicated before the Senate of his country the willingness of the authorities to act as mediator to help resolve the political crises in Venezuela and Nicaragua.
“Let it be clear, Mexico is fully prepared to serve as a bridge of dialogue and mediator of the internal conflicts of that country, if so required,” talking about Venezuelan the dignitary said, local media reported on Tuesday.
Regarding Nicaragua, where last year there were protests against the government of President Daniel Ortega, Reyes Zúñiga said that Mexico would be ready to participate, if we receive an invitation from Managua, “in any mechanism for facilitation and mediation of dialogue that allows the rapprochement of the parties to the conflict, with full respect for their internal affairs and their self-determination.”
The senior official stressed that the new Mexican Administration, chaired by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will base its relations with the countries of the region on the basis of respect for “the constitutional principles of non-intervention, self-determination of peoples, peaceful settlement of disputes, respect for human rights and international cooperation for development.”
For Mexico, said the undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, “it’s time to look again to the south to consolidate its presence as a relevant regional actor.”
The Mexican government abstained this week in the vote of the permanent council of the Organization of American States (OAS) to not recognize the new mandate of the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro. They had also refused to sign the January 4 declaration of the so-called Grupo de Lima, which described as “illegitimate” to Maduro’s new government, being the only one of the 14 countries participating in that group.
The Executive of López Obrador insists on maintaining its position of non-intervention and respect for the sovereignty and autonomy of other countries as one of the pillars of its foreign policy.
