The Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) announced two new mobile data plans following the dialogues between the authorities and the Cuban population, especially university students, who expressed their concerns about some recent measures announced by the company.
According to information provided by ETECSA, the new plans include an “Additional Plan” which allows the purchase of two gigabytes (GB) for 1,200 Cuban pesos (CUP) once a month, valid for 35 days.
This plan, available through the TransfermĂłvil digital payment platform and online services, adds to the existing data plans in the user’s line and extends its life cycle.

According to ETECSA, this offer responds to the request for a more affordable plan than the “Datos EXTRA” plan. Moreover, the “Sector Plan” is aimed exclusively at university students, offering six GB for 360 CUP. This plan is also administered by Transfermóvil and online services. However, it requires the validation of the ownership of the mobile lines.
For this purpose, ETECSA is working with universities to update the lists, notifying beneficiaries via SMS once the process has been completed.
The new rates come after criticisms of the May 30 measures, which limited recharges in CUP to 360 pesos per month and promoted plans in US dollars for the acquisition of foreign currency, income that had been diverted by criminal entities that did not allow the money to reach the company’s accounts.
These decisions were questioned, especially by students, who demanded greater internet access for educational purposes. ETECSA explained that the initial tariffs were due to the need to sustain the network, but acknowledged the impact on the population.
“We have managed to find an acceptable solution at the moment,” Yusmani Rojas PĂ©rez, deputy director of ETECSA’s commercial vice-presidency, said to the press.
The company also noted that 38% of its users in Cuba consume more than eight GB of data per month, reflecting the growing demand for connectivity.
Despite the new offers, reactions on social media show dissatisfaction. Users consider that two GB for 1,200 CUP are insufficient for current needs.
For students, the “Sector Plan” represents a relief, but its implementation depends on the certification of lines, a process that is in progress, which may delay access for some.
ETECSA highlighted its commitment to education and the digital society but admitted that current solutions do not cover all connectivity needs.
