The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, urged the Public Ministry to open an investigation into the revelation made by the Colombian paramilitary group, Autodefensas Conquistadoras de la Sierra, which complained in a recent statement that they “had been contacted by the Venezuelan far right, to send a thousand men to Venezuela and generate violence in the border states, attack the electrical grid, and when the opposition cries fraud on July 28, to create the ambience of a civil war in Venezuela.”
President Maduro asked Attorney General Tarek William Saab to take over the investigation. “The information that the intelligence chiefs, police chiefs, military chiefs are sending me is very serious, they are sending it to me from Colombia,” the president said on Friday, July 5. He reassured the Venezuelan people that “we are in a battle for the right to peace” and that “no one is going to mess-up Venezuela.”

Earlier on Friday, the Colombian paramilitary group Autodefensas Conquistadoras de la Sierra reported in a statement that their units in the Colombian department of La Guajira have been contacted by extreme right-wing groups in Venezuela with requests to destabilize Venezuela amid the electoral process.
The organization explained that Venezuelan far-right sectors have made “all kinds of requests, including attacking the electrical infrastructure, attempting against incumbent candidate President Nicolás Maduro, and infiltrating protests and creating chaos in the streets if he is re-elected.”
In this regard, the armed group stated, “Our organization does not get involved in the internal affairs of other countries, our organization is responsible for and has the purpose of maintaining order in the Sierra Nevada. We will contact the diplomatic authorities of Venezuela to disclose details of this information.”
