The Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yvan Gil, reported that the embassy of the Netherlands hosted the former presidential candidate of the extreme right, Edmundo González, as an asylum seeker for a month without notifying Venezuelan authorities.
This Sunday, September 8, on social media, Gil commented on a letter published by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Caspar Veldkamp, in which Veldkamp revealed that González had sought asylum at the embassy of the Netherlands, in Caracas, on October 29.
In this regard, the Venezuelan foreign minister pointed out that Edmundo González’s plan “was never electoral,” since he knew what would happen in Venezuela, “and he went to take refuge.”
González sought refuge on the same day, Gil noted, “that the terrorist comanditos were causing disasters and violence throughout the country.”
“While hospitals and schools were being set on fire,” wrote Gil, Edmundo González was received as a guest by Dutch authorities, who failed in their duty to inform Venezuela’s government of their actions.
Given this context, Gil announced that he will send a letter of protest to the government of the Netherlands for not reporting on the status of the former presidential candidate, as established by international diplomatic protocols.
According to the Dutch letter, the far-right representative informed the Netherlands at the beginning of September of his decision to leave the embassy and Venezuela. However, the Dutch government tried to maintain continued hospitality.
However, later, and of his own free will, the former presidential candidate moved from that Dutch embassy to the residence of the Spanish ambassador in Caracas. At that time, contacts and conversations began between the authorities of Spain and Venezuela to grant González safe conduct to leave the country last Saturday, September 7.
